Even before Covid-19, being a renter in New Orleans was already a sour deal. Many people who aren’t from New Orleans raced to buy up our homes in order to turn them into AirBnb’s. Even if you managed to find a place to stay there are almost no legal protections for tenants in this city. Landlords will claim that your rent is necessary to keep a roof over your head, helping to pay for the costs of repairs, mortgage, and property taxes. If that’s the case then why did they buy a house they can’t afford? It certainly doesn’t feel like they are helping us out when we have to fork over a big chunk of the money we earn every month so another person can pad their bank account. Everyone deserves a place to live, and no one deserves to profit from that life affirming necessity. We want to find ways to help each other stand up to landlords and promote changes to the rules so tenants have a fighting chance in court against landlords!
With millions of Americans losing their income due to Covid-19, many are unable to afford their rent. All across the country tenants are finding other people who rent from the same landlord and organizing to withhold rent. If we can’t work, we shouldn’t have to pay!
Here in New Orleans, tenants’ groups and housing advocates lobbied city council to support extending the ban on all evictions until August 24th, in line with the federal government’s recommendation. On May 9th the resolution passed, which is a huge victory, but we still need a commitment from the judges to stay home and keep their courts closed. We are asking people to email judges a short, respectful plea with your story if having more time could help you keep your housing. The New Orleans Renter’s Rights Assembly is a group that works on behalf of the tenants of New Orleans, trying to change the laws to protect renters from eviction and displacement. If you’d like to get involved and advocate for your rights as a tenant, email frank@jpnsi.org. Attempting to negotiate with a landlord by yourself is really hard. However, with the help of other tenants, you can significantly increase your power! The Renter’s Rights Assembly can help you answer legal questions around rent, leases, and eviction as well as find ways to fight against the cruel behavior of landlords. The system is designed to keep tenants at the mercy of our landlords, but together we can work to change that.
Incluso antes de Covid-19, ser inquilino en Nueva Orleans ya era un mal trato. Muchas personas que no son de Nueva Orleans corrieron a comprar nuestras casas para convertirlas en casas de AirBnb. Aquí en Nueva Orleans, los grupos de inquilinos y los defensores de la vivienda presionaron al concejo municipal para que apoyara la extensión de la prohibición de todos los desalojos hasta el 24 de agosto, de acuerdo con la recomendación del gobierno federal.
